Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I test my pool water?
Test chlorine and pH levels 2-3 times per week during swimming season. Test alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid monthly. After heavy rain, high bather load, or adding chemicals, test more frequently.
How long should I run my pool pump each day?
Run your pump long enough to turn over all the water at least once per day - typically 8-12 hours. Variable speed pumps can run longer at lower speeds for better filtration and energy efficiency. During summer or heavy use, run it more.
When should I backwash or clean my filter?
For sand and DE filters, backwash when pressure rises 8-10 PSI above normal. For cartridge filters, clean when pressure rises 8-10 PSI or at least monthly. Deep clean all filter types 1-2 times per year with a filter cleaner solution.
Do saltwater pools require less maintenance?
Saltwater pools still require regular maintenance, but you don't need to manually add chlorine. You'll still need to test and balance pH (which tends to drift high), check salt levels monthly, clean the salt cell every 3-6 months, and perform all other standard maintenance tasks.
What maintenance is needed to winterize a pool?
To winterize: balance chemicals, lower water level below skimmer, blow out plumbing lines, add antifreeze to lines, remove and store equipment, add winterizing chemicals, install a winter cover. In mild climates, you may just reduce pump runtime instead of full winterization.
